Metabolic Brain Health is a neurologist-led approach to protecting the brain through better metabolic health. At Neurology Solutions, it is part of our broader Brain Health & Healthy Aging program — and it is medicine, directed by a neurologist. It is not a weight-loss program, not a GLP-1 clinic, and not functional medicine by another name. Brain health is not a wellness trend to us. It is neurology, applied early.
You do not need a diagnosis to begin. Whether you have prediabetes or rising blood sugar, a family history of dementia or Parkinson’s, midlife metabolic changes, or you simply want to protect your brain while you still have the most room to act, this is where that work starts — with a physician who understands the brain.
Why does a neurologist care about metabolism? Because the brain is the body’s most energy-hungry organ, and the same factors that damage blood vessels and disrupt blood sugar are among the strongest, most modifiable influences on how the brain ages. Metabolism is not a side topic in brain health — it is central to it.
A Brain Issue, Not a Weight Issue
“Metabolic health” has become a marketing category — weight-loss clinics, medication mills, and influencers all use the phrase. Our approach is different because the goal is different. We are not here to change a number on the scale; we are here to protect your brain, using metabolic health as one of the most powerful levers we have.
- Not a weight-loss program. Body composition can matter for the brain, but weight loss is never the point. The point is protecting cognition, vasculature, and long-term function.
- Not a GLP-1 clinic. We do not exist to hand out a medication. Where a therapy genuinely fits your clinical picture, it is one tool among many — considered and monitored by a neurologist, not the product being sold.
- Not metabolic-influencer content. No trends, no supplement funnels, no continuous-glucose theater. Just evidence and clinical judgment applied to your actual health.
- Not functional medicine by another name. This is neurology. We start from the brain and the nervous system and work back to the metabolic factors that protect them — interpreted in clinical context by a physician who diagnoses and treats brain disease.
What We Measure & Address
Metabolic brain health is not one number — it is a set of connected systems that either protect the brain or quietly erode it over decades. We measure them directly and address them as part of a single, physician-directed plan, drawing on our metabolic enhancement work and objective body-composition testing where appropriate.
Blood sugar & insulin resistance
Insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar are among the most strongly evidenced metabolic contributors to cognitive aging — the link is real enough that researchers sometimes describe Alzheimer’s as “type 3 diabetes.” We assess these directly and address them proactively, long before they would show up as a problem.
Blood pressure & vascular health
What is good for your blood vessels is good for your brain. Midlife blood pressure is one of the best-documented modifiable risk factors for later cognitive decline, because the brain depends on healthy vasculature to function and protect itself.
Body composition & visceral fat
Not weight, but what the body is made of. Visceral fat and low muscle mass are metabolically active and linked to inflammation that affects the brain. Objective body-composition measurement gives us a far more useful picture than the scale.
Lipids, inflammation & the metabolic picture
Cholesterol, chronic inflammation, and related markers round out the metabolic contributors to brain aging. We interpret them together, in the context of your history and goals — not as isolated numbers to “optimize.”
Who Metabolic Brain Health Care Is For
This work is most valuable early — while metabolic health is still highly modifiable. Patients come to us because they are:
Prediabetes or insulin resistance
Managing rising blood sugar and wanting to protect the brain, not just the numbers.
Midlife metabolic change
Noticing shifts in weight, energy, blood pressure, or labs and wanting a brain-first response.
Family history of dementia or Parkinson’s
Concerned about inherited risk and ready to act on the metabolic factors within your control. Family history of dementia →
Healthy-aging adults
Committed to protecting cognition and independence and wanting the highest-impact levers, done right.
Focused on cognitive longevity
Working to protect memory and thinking over decades, for whom metabolism is a top lever. See cognitive longevity.
Existing neurology patients
Movement-disorder and neurology patients who want to protect metabolic and brain health alongside their care.
How Metabolic Brain Health Care Works Here
1. Establish your baseline. We start by understanding you fully — your history, your family history, your goals, and objective measures of your metabolic and brain health today. That baseline is what lets us catch and address change early.
2. Build a personalized, physician-directed plan. From there, Dr. Izor builds a plan focused on your highest-impact metabolic risks — blood sugar, blood pressure, body composition, and the lifestyle factors that drive them. It is specific and evidence-informed, not a template or a product.
3. Track and adjust over time. Metabolic brain health is a long game. Your measures are repeated on a defined schedule, your plan is refined against what actually changed, and the goal is to stay ahead of change. Much of this care is available by telehealth for patients in Texas and Florida.
How This Connects to the Rest of Your Brain Health
Metabolic health does not sit in isolation. It is one of the strongest levers in cognitive longevity and a core part of healthy aging — which is why we address it within a single, physician-directed plan rather than as a standalone program. For patients already living with a neurological condition, protecting metabolic health is part of living well with it: if you or a loved one is managing a movement or neurological disorder, or noticing changes in memory or thinking, metabolic care reinforces the rest of your treatment.
The gut is part of this picture too. Fermentation in the colon feeds directly into the liver through the portal vein, which is why how the gut interacts with metabolic health is a question we take seriously rather than treat as a separate specialty.
Backed by Real Neurological Authority
The credibility of a metabolic brain-health program depends entirely on who is behind it. Neurology Solutions is led by Robert M. Izor, MD, MS — a board-certified neurologist, fellowship-trained in movement disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation, who completed his neurology residency at UT Health Science Center Houston as Chief Resident, holds an MS in Molecular Immunology, is a member of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, and is affiliated with St. David’s Medical Center. Two decades caring for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other complex neurological conditions has taught us what helps the brain remain resilient, functional, and independent over time.
Metabolic Brain Health: Common Questions
Why does a neurologist care about metabolism?
Because metabolism is central to how the brain ages. The brain is the body’s most energy-hungry organ, and factors like insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and vascular disease are among the strongest modifiable influences on cognitive decline. Addressing them is squarely a neurological concern.
Is insulin resistance really linked to dementia?
A substantial body of research links insulin resistance and poor metabolic health to higher risk of cognitive decline — the connection is strong enough that Alzheimer’s is sometimes described as “type 3 diabetes.” It is not a guarantee of anything, but it is one of the most actionable risks we can address early.
How is this different from a weight-loss clinic or a GLP-1 program?
The goal is your brain, not the scale, and the care is led by a neurologist. Weight loss and medications like GLP-1s may or may not be part of a plan, but they are never the point and never the product. We start from brain protection and use metabolic health as the lever.
Do I need a metabolic diagnosis like diabetes to start?
No. This work is often most valuable before a diagnosis, when there is the most room to change the trajectory. If you already have a metabolic condition, we fold brain protection into how it is managed.
What do you actually measure?
Blood sugar and insulin resistance, blood pressure and vascular health, body composition, lipids, and inflammatory markers — interpreted together, in the context of your history and goals, rather than as isolated numbers.
Is this part of concierge membership, and can I use my insurance?
Yes to both, and they are separate things. Your medical care is billed to your insurance or Medicare in the usual way, and you pay your normal copay or deductible. Membership provides the structured brain-health program: a neurologist deciding which changes matter most for you and which comes first, the support to put them into practice, and the measurement that shows whether they worked — non-covered services that work alongside your medical care. Membership is not insurance and does not replace it. Many members use HSA or FSA funds; check with your plan administrator.
Care is available in Austin and by telehealth in Texas and Florida.
