Neurology Solutions leads Parkinson’s panel

By Karen Hales, Neurology Solutions Contributing Writer

Neurology Solutions Medical Director Dr. Robert M. Izor and the Neurology Solutions provider team will participate in a panel discussion on a range of Parkinson’s treatments during the August meeting of the Capital Area Parkinson’s Society.

Dr. Izor will discuss the potential of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to improve quality of life and mobility for patients with PD. Neurology Solutions offers HRT to a small number of patients who are seen by the practice frequently to determine if optimizing their hormone levels closer to the hormone profile of their youth can improve mobility and quality of life. The patients are being closely monitored for HRT side effects and to see whether the treatment can reduce certain symptoms associated with PD, such as fractures, muscular atrophy, loss of libido, depressed mood and fatigue.

Trey Eskew, a physician assistant on staff at NSC since 2010, will offer information on current medications used in treating PD, including Aricept and Namenda for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Dementia, and Rytary, a carbidopa-levodopa extended release capsule approved for the treatment of PD earlier this year and shown to reduce off-time of dyskinesia symptoms.

Nurse Practitioner Sean Sullivan will discuss Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), an advanced treatment in which a stimulator is surgically implanted and programmed to deliver small electrical stimulus to affected areas of the brain.

Also on the panel, Physical Therapist Kara Dougherty will focus on nutrition, exercise and physical therapy to manage PD symptoms. Dougherty is certified in LSVT BIG, an intensive whole body amplitude-based training protocol for people with PD.
