Approach and Treatments

Our Approach to Care is Unique

Our unique approach to patient care at Neurology Solutions is based on the vision of our founder, Dr. Robert Izor MD. Dr. Izor’s vision is based on doing things in a unique way in three major areas:

1. Utilizing a Multi-Disciplinary, Highly-Coordinated, Team-Based Approach to Deliver Comprehensive Care

We treat our patients with a multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals — not just a single neurologist — all under one roof. This proximity allows for a true, team-based approach to patient care where our caregivers are able to collaborate and coordinate their treatments to meet the specific, unique needs of each patient.

The “multi-disciplinary” aspect of our team caregivers refers to the fact that, in addition to the typical movement disorder treatments that are traditionally overseen by a neurologist such as medications or even the Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedure, our team also includes a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who specializes in internal medicine.

2. Thinking Outside the Box

Examples of our outside-the-box thinking are everywhere. Assembling a multi-disciplinary team of caregivers and putting them all under one roof to facilitate the delivery of highly coordinated, comprehensive care is perhaps the single best example of this, but there are certainly others.

Treating movement disorder patients with Botox™ is one example of how we think outside the box. Most people associate Botox™ with cosmetic dermatology. However, our experience has shown that Botox™ can be a very effective treatment for certain movement disorder symptoms.

Another example is our tendency to recommend Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) treatments for qualified patients earlier on in the progression of their condition. Ever since DBS was approved for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, the conventional wisdom was to opt for the DBS procedure only as a sort of last resort — something to try after the patient’s medications were no longer effective at controlling their symptoms. That’s not how we see it. In our view, opting for the DBS procedure earlier rather than later for qualifying patients helps them achieve a better long-term outcome while allowing them to substantially reduce the dosages of their medications, thus reducing potential long-term toxicity. In fact, after undergoing the DBS procedure, one of our patients no longer needed to take her medications at all!

Last but certainly not least, our outside-the-box thinking is represented in the way that we care for the whole patient — we don’t just treat their symptoms in a vacuum. That’s why we’ve made metabolic enhancement such a big part of our continuum of care. It’s also the reason why we have a doctor specializing in internal medicine on our team. The fact of the matter is, the better a movement disorder patient’s overall health is, the better they’ll be able to manage their condition. Healthier patients also experience much better results from their other treatments.

3. Seeing Our Patients Often

Movement disorders are incredibly complex diseases with symptoms that are constantly changing. Additionally, no two movement disorder cases are alike. Treating these conditions in a ‘set it and forget it’ manner does not work. Successfully treating these conditions requires our team to make constant adjustments to the care each patient receives, responding in almost real-time to the way the patient’s symptoms change, progress, and react to the various treatments we’re using.

That’s why we like to see our patients often at Neurology Solutions. Some of our patients even visit us on a weekly basis, but at a minimum, we like to see our patients every 2-4 weeks so that we are able to constantly evaluate, adjust, and optimize every treatment we’re using in their care plan.

Our Goal is to Help Patients Live Their Lives Fullest

It’s a universal truth of movement disorders that no two cases are alike.

However, even though the cases are different, our treatment objectives for our movement disorder patients are pretty much the same across the board:

  1. Delay the onset of their symptoms
  2. Reduce the severity of symptoms once they appear

These two objectives roll up to a single universal goal for all of our patients:

Provide them with the best quality of life possible.
